Year 3 STEAM students learn with LEGO WeDo kits

19/09/2018

Year 3 have been investigating the metamorphosis of frogs.  Students used the Lego Wedo kit to model this cycle showing each of the main stages. Students were required to navigate ideas with their partner in order to build their scientific models out of lego. Appropriate algorithms were created in order to successfully program their frogs to mimic the movement, sound and behaviour of frogs.  We also explored the use of sensors.  Students have been introduced to language such as inputs and outputs, digital solutions, peripheral devices and visual programming.

Most importantly students were developing their problem solving skills.  When their programs or their designs did not work for them, they were required to debug and highlight their errors in order to have another go.  Students were so pleased with themselves when they were able to work out their own problems to challenges.

Throughout this inquiry process, students were asked to reflect on their work by collecting work samples including images and video and importing these into a reflective journal using the app ‘Book Creator’.  Students have developed their ICT capabilities well.  They can confidently take photos at a range of angles, take screen shots to demonstrate their learning, insert photos, use editing tools such as drawing, inserting text, voice and navigating across multiple apps in order to create a digital solution.  Fabulous learning year 3!
