Music education at Ascot is an important part of the school curriculum under the guidance of three specialist teachers of classroom music, assisted by visiting instrumental teachers.  Three concert bands, brass ensemble, a string ensemble and four choirs share in a love and appreciation of music.

The Ascot Music Program provides a wide range of musical experiences for the children, both in the classroom and in extra-curricular activities.

Competitions, community events, music evenings and musical productions provide opportunities for students to develop their full musical potential and encourage the pursuit of excellence.

Classroom Music

Three specialist music teachers conduct class music lessons for all year levels each week. Prep to Year 4 attend two lessons per week and Years 5 to 6 attend one weekly lesson.

Choral Music

The Senior Choir and Boy’s Don’t Sing Choir (members from Years 3 to 6), Intermediate Choir and Junior Choir perform at school assemblies, Music on Sunday, Carols by Candlelight, Musical Evenings and a variety of community functions.

Each year, years 5 and 6 children present a musical production as part of the Musical Evening in November.

There are no auditions to participate, just a commitment to attend rehearsals.

Friends of Music

A group of dedicated parents conduct fundraising activities such as discos and film evenings and supports the school music program by helping organise the Musical Evenings, music events, band concerts, transporting equipment, repairs and many other tasks.

Instrumental Music

Children from Year 3 to Year 6 have the opportunity to participate in our Instrumental Music Program (fees may apply).

Year 3

Students are offered the opportunity to play Strings, Woodwind and Brass instruments.

Free half hour group lessons are conducted by a String Teacher from Education Queensland during the school day.

Woodwind and Brass lessons are conducted in small groups by two private teachers for a nominal fee during the school day.

Years 4 - 6

Students are offered the opportunity to play Strings, Woodwind, Brass and Percussion.

Free half hour group lessons are conducted by Instrumental Teachers from Education Queensland during the school day.

Selection of students

At the end of each year, a letter is sent home to all parents whose children have expressed an interest in learning an instrument the following year.  Where the number of applications exceed places available in the program, a selection process is utilised.  (For more information please contact the Music Office.)
