Special Education

Ascot State School special education program (SEP)

Ascot State School is part of the Windsor special education program cluster which consists of three schools, Ascot, Windsor and Wilston State School. The cluster consists of a Head of Special Education Services (HOSES), special education teachers and special education teacher aides.

An inclusive approach is valued and promoted at Ascot State School.  Special education and advisory visiting teachers (AVTs) work collaboratively with classroom teachers, parents and other specialists to support students with disabilities in the school environment.

Students are eligible for the provision of SEP support and additional targeted resources if they are identified as meeting criteria for one or more of the six Education Adjustment Program (EAP) disability categories of:

  • Intellectual disability (ID)
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Speech language impairment (SLI)
  • Physical impairment (PI)
  • Vision impairment (VI)
  • Hearing impairment (HI)

Students with disabilities at Ascot State School spend most of their time included in their mainstream class.  They are offered support from the SEP teachers and teacher aides whilst they are in class.  Their teachers are also assisted by the SEP to cater for the student’s curriculum and individual needs.  Ascot State School SEP also provides support to students with disabilities, their parents, carers and teachers through:

  • Cooperative planning of Individual Support Plans (ISPs) and Individual Learning Plans (ILPs)
  • Reporting at an alternate year level for students on an ILP
  • Access to parent and teacher resources
  • Social skills programs
  • Physical therapy programs
  • Support for transitions to high school
  • Lunchtime Club to promote peer relationships and positive behaviour
  • Cooperative planning of Individual Behaviour Management and Risk Management Plans
  • Small group withdrawal in SEP facilities to focus on Individual Learning Plans
  • Access to Education Queensland therapy services.
