District sport

The P.E. specialists will select a team, 9 – 12 yr olds, to represent Ascot State School in swimming, cross country and track & field based on school carnival performances and trials. Only 10 – 12 yr olds can progress to Metropolitan North level, if they meet qualification standards. For all other sports, selection trials are open to 10 – 12 yr olds, with any 10 yr olds having to display exceptional skills.

District swimming

Based on swimmers’ performances in the preceding year’s Interhouse Swimming Carnival, children will be encouraged to time trial at the school selection trial in Week 1 of the new school year.  New students in the school are encouraged to trial. Children trialling for the swimming team must meet the district qualifying times. Ascot State School is allowed to nominate three swimmers in each event, if they meet the qualifying time.

District cross country

Children aged 9 – 12 yrs are encouraged to train and prepare for the District Cross Country competition. Children are also encouraged to train outside school hours which will be the responsibility of the competitor and family. Selection for the school team will occur at the school cross country event, with 5 runners chosen in each age group (9 – 12 years).

Track events

The top three finalists on sports day will be nominated in 800m/200m/100m, 4th place selected in relay team, 5th place relay reserve position.

Field events

The top two boys and girls will be nominated as long as they meet qualifying standards.  Any child who is sick or injured on sports day and can’t compete, may challenge for a place in the event. Competitors who know they will be away at a representative sports event may trial for the event before sports day and their results will count for school representation but not Age Champion Pennant points.

Other district sports

For selection in other district sporting teams, trials are conducted in different sports at selected venues on specific dates. These dates/venues are published in the school newsletter and children 10 – 12 yrs who play, and are skilled in the specific sports will meet with the P.E. specialist at directed times to register their interest. As numbers for trials are limited, those children who are most skilled/experienced will be selected to nominate. Year 6 children will be given priority as stated in the Qld Sports Policy Document.

Team sport

District convenors require children with a high level of skill at district trials. At school level we must determine who has the best opportunity to be selected into the district team.

Criteria for Selection to attend City District Trials:
(a)skill  level
(b)ability to read play and positioning
(c)knowledge of rules
(d)sportsmanship and attitude

Swim club

Ascot Swim Club, established in 1973 operates as an amateur junior swim club.  It is a club where all members are encouraged to participate at all levels and abilities.  We are a club that focuses on participation, where each individual swimmer is encouraged to swim against his/her own personal best time with the opportunity to improve in a fun and supportive environment.

Club night enables the swimmers to gain a great introduction into a racing environment.  It provides race practice for our junior and senior members in 25m, 50m and 100m timed events.  The club also offers junior family members an opportunity to swim in a fun 12.5m event assisted by senior swimmers.

Ascot Swim Club is held every Friday night during Term 1 and Term 4 (from mid-October to late March.) These meets are held in the school swimming pool, which is a heated outdoor pool.

Parents and younger siblings are all welcome and can enjoy a social Friday evening around the pool – with a BBQ and licensed canteen available.

The club participates in an interschool meet during the season "The Ascot Cup." This is a three way swim off between Eagle Junction, Wilston and Ascot swimming clubs.

The club awards a “Swimmer of the Week” to encourage all swimmers throughout the season. The Club Championships are held at the end of the season where our “Age Champions” are recognised.

Swim Club is a volunteer based club run by parents and sponsored by the local community.  If you love swimming like we do, please get involved.  It's so much fun and the children will love you for it!

Registrations can be done through Flexischools. All local children aged between 4-12 years of age are welcome to join.
