Our library is home to a large collection of children’s
literature, information books and teacher resources. Use of the Library
provides all students with the opportunity to develop literacy skills and a
love of literature. All classes have
weekly timetabled borrowing times, however all students can also borrow library
books independently as often as they wish.
All loans are for two weeks, however can be renewed if required.
Independent borrowing times are before school from 8.30-8.50am and
during both first and second breaks.
Library staff are available to help students with their book selections.
Students in Prep may borrow one book at a time; Year 1 two books,
while students in Years 2-6 may borrow up to four books. Students use a waterproof library bag as per
the book list. Suitable library bags are
available for purchase from the school Uniform Shop.
The
Library design, layout and furniture has been carefully selected to cater for
the various age groupings from Prep to Year 6.
The use of bright, lively colours and clever furniture design make the library
appealing to all ages.
Students are provided with a password to access the online library catalogue and browse the entire range of resources available in our library from the comfort of their own home.
Book week
In term 3,
we hold our annual Book Week Celebrations.
Each year, schools and public libraries across Australia spend a week
celebrating books and Australian authors and illustrators. At Ascot State School, each class reads the
Children’s Book Council of Australia’s nominated Early Childhood or Picture
Book of the Year books. Students are
encouraged to participate in our Book Week Dress up day.

Scholastic book club
Families
are able to purchase books from our Scholastic Book Club. These books are chosen and levelled by
Scholastics team of experts. The Book
Club catalogue contains a core range of books specifically chosen for the
selected year levels. Through supporting
Book Club, we earn points that go towards the purchase of additional reading
materials for our school Library. We
hold a Scholastic Book Fair each year.
Birthday book program
We offer a Birthday Book program, where families
are invited to celebrate their child’s birthday and commemorate
special events by donating a book to the school library. Each donated book receives a book plate that
memorialises the birthday or special event. Books are processed
and displayed in our library for all children to borrow.
